Hachette India has made a historic leadership change with Riti Jagoorie as the new Managing Director, taking over from Thomas Abraham, the founding MD who steps down after a glorious 18-year career. Jagoorie will take over officially in January 2026, beginning a new era for the publishing house that Abraham founded from scratch.
Abraham, who joined Hachette in 2007 after running Penguin India, turned Hachette India into a 100-crore publishing behemoth from an INR 8 crore start-up. Under Abraham's leadership, the company not only grew profitably but also achieved record industry-leading hardback sales such as blockbusters Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Playing It My Way by Sachin Tendulkar.
Stepping into the top role, Jagoorie brings 17 years of deep industry expertise, having joined Hachette India in 2008 as product manager. Now VP of Product & Marketing, she has played a pivotal role in scaling the company’s key publishing imprints, spearheading record-setting campaigns and bestsellers including Indra Nooyi’s My Life in Full and The Silent Patient.
"I'm proud to take over Thomas's mantle and head a team that's established such a robust publishing brand," Jagoorie said. "This is a thrilling time for Indian publishing, and I look forward to writing our next chapter of growth."
Hachette UK International CEO Charlie King called Jagoorie a "razor-sharp commercial leader with vision", while Abraham called her book and business instincts "exceptional".
With Jagoorie's promotion, Hachette India is among the largest publishing companies in India to have a woman at the helm—something significant for an industry that is changing with new styles of leadership and new ideas.
