Microsoft Expands AI Marketplace to Simplify Publisher Content Licensing

Microsoft is growing their AI content marketplace which aims to create a scalable platform for publishers to license their premium content to AI builders through an easier alternative to the current method of one-off negotiations (or “one-on-one”) between publisher and AI builder by moving toward a faster method (i.e., click-to-sign).

Initially launched as a pilot with a limited group of publishers using Microsoft’s Copilot as the first customer, the AI Marketplace is currently evolving to allow more publishers to participate. The goal is to test for pricing, access and compensation structures with the ability to accommodate many publishers globally.

Among the initial partners participating in a pilot phase are major media organizations such as Business Insider, Vox Media, USA Today, People Inc., the Associated Press, Hearst Magazines and Condé Nast.

In addition to building the infrastructure for this improved relationship between publishers and AI developers, Microsoft will be working with publishers to standardize contract terms and implement data feedback systems that will help publishers understand how their content is utilized. Ultimately, the goal is to enable a scalable environment for all AI builders to license premium publisher content and to provide publishers with equitable compensation for their work, as well as analytics on usage of their content.
