Indian Authors Shine in Asian Prize for Fiction Shortlist

Two Indian authors and one of Indian origin have been shortlisted for the Asian Prize for Fiction. These books include 'The Witch in the Peepal Tree”' by Arefa Tehsin, “Rescuing a River Breeze” by Mrinalini Harchandrai and “Woman Who Climbed Trees” by Nepali-Indian writer Smriti Ravindra
Arefa Tehsin, hailing from Udaipur, Rajasthan, stands out for her novel "The Witch in the Peepal Tree," an approximately 315-page narrative set against the backdrop of Makar Sankranti in 1950 in Udaipur. 

This novel weaves together elements of crime, social issues, and politics, marking a significant debut in adult fiction for Tehsin, who is renowned for her environmental children's books. Published by HarperCollins, the novel has garnered international acclaim. Tehsin's father, Dr. Raza H. Tehsin, is a prominent environmentalist in Udaipur.

Apart from Arefa, Nigerian author Ayobami Adebayo's 'The Spell of Good Things', Pakistani Danish Elahi's 'The Idle Stance of the Tippler Pigeon', and Sri Lankan-American author V.V. Ganeshananthan's 'Brotherless Nights' have also been selected. Three books from the shortlist will be chosen for the Asian Trail.
