Journalist turned author Deepa Anappara has longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2020 for her debut novel “Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line”. Anappara has written her debut piece focusing beyond the glamorous life of big cities, a life which grows in a slum. The story puts up such questions like can you show a poor person noticing that their toilet is dirty? If they are using it daily, why would they notice that? These are the type of life scenarios discussed in the story. Anappara has already gained her experience in covering the education beat and child’s rights. She worked on these two topics in Delhi and Mumbai before moving to the UK IN 2008. The novel has won the 2019 Lucy Cavendish College Fiction Prize when it was still a manuscript. The story is about Jai and Pari. Jai keeps eyeing the sweet shops, watches too many reality police shows, and considers himself to be smarter than his friends Pari and Faiz. On the other hand, Pari gets the best grades and Faiz has a real-life job. On a sudden day, one of their classmates has gone missing and Jai decides to solve the mystery by using all of his detective skills gained from the tv shows. Suddenly, more children started disappearing from the neighbourhood. The trio of the friends didn’t get a chance to realise that their lives are about to turn upside down.
