CBSE Enforces Use of NCERT Textbooks in Schools: New Guidelines Effective Immediately

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced crucial updates to its Affiliation Bye-Laws, mandating the exclusive use of NCERT textbooks across schools in India. These revisions, detailed in Chapter 2, Clause 2.4.7 of the Affiliation Bye-Laws 2018, are designed to standardize educational content and ensure the removal of any potentially objectionable material. The new guidelines, effective immediately as communicated by CBSE Secretary Himanshu Gupta, reflect the Board’s commitment to upholding high educational standards.

For students in Classes I to VIII, schools are encouraged to primarily use NCERT or SCERT textbooks while supplementing with additional materials that adhere to the National Curriculum Framework for Foundational Stage (NCF-FS) and National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE). This ensures a comprehensive educational experience that connects theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.

In the case of students in Classes IX to XII, the CBSE now requires the exclusive use of NCERT textbooks where available, with alternative CBSE publications to be used if necessary. While supplementary and digital content are allowed to enhance learning, they must align with the NCF-SE guidelines. The emphasis on content sensitivity is critical, with a strong directive to avoid any material that could be considered objectionable to any group.

Schools must also publicly list their prescribed textbooks on their websites, supported by a declaration from both the Manager and Principal, confirming that they have reviewed and accepted responsibility for the content. Failure to comply with these guidelines will result in CBSE action against the schools found in violation.
