Indian Author Amitav Ghosh Wins Dutch Erasmus Prize

Indian author Amitav Ghosh wins the Dutch Erasmus Prize for highlighting climate change's impact on humanity, earning €150,000 for his remarkable works.

Renowned Indian author has won the esteemed Dutch Erasmus Prize for his remarkable contributions on climate change and it impact it has on humanity, particularly on Indian subcontinent. In a statement, the prize committe commended the author and mentioned that Ghosh "has delved deeply into the question of how to do justice to this existential threat that defies our imagination,". The winner of theis prize receives a cash reward of 150,000 euros (approximately $157,000). The popular Erasmus Prize, which is awarded to people for an "exceptional contribution to the humanities, the social sciences or the arts, in Europe and beyond", will be presented on Tuesday by the Dutch King Willem-Alexander. The Praemium Erasmianum Foundation noted that Ghosh has described the effects of climate change been linked with human destiny. Ghosh’s works like "The Hungry Tide" highlights the harmful effects of rising sea level on the Sundarbans. Besides that his work "The Great Derangement" sets climate change in context of war and trade. The Prize Committe noted that Through understanding and imagination he creates space for hope, a prerequisite for change.
