The newly launched book fair in Tiruchi, organized by the district administration alongside the Directorate of Public Libraries and The Book Sellers and Publishers Association of South India, is gradually attracting bibliophiles eager to explore this year’s offerings.

Despite daytime humidity presenting difficulties for visitors browsing the stalls, small groups of students were spotted on Monday perusing books related to academics and hobbies.

This year, 57 authors from Tiruchi district are showcasing their works at a dedicated stall. V. Govindasamy, president of the Readers’ Forum at the District Central Library, expressed optimism about the growing number of local writers but emphasized the need for greater efforts to foster reading habits among children both at home and in educational settings.

Although organizers anticipated a significant turnout over the weekend, the hot weather likely contributed to a lower-than-expected public attendance. A Chennai-based publisher reported daily sales between ₹1,500 and ₹2,000 since the fair began, hoping for increased activity as the week progresses.

However, vendors offering discounted book bundles sourced from bulk traders experienced brisk business. M. Sadhiq, owner of Adaiyaalam Publications from Puthanatham village in Manapparai, noted that publishers with innovative projects must navigate a competitive landscape and require readers willing to explore beyond typical fair selections.

Attendees suggested relocating stalls related to government projects to create more space for publishers to exhibit their works.
