The world's first book with a seal of authenticity indicating that it was authored by a person and not by Chat GPT has gone on sale, potentially transforming the worldwide publishing sector, reducing the quantity of AI-generated novels supposedly flooding Amazon, and sparking thousands of lawsuits.

The book's sales page also contains a formal warranty, providing readers with additional protection in the case that it is bot-made.

It states: "This book was written by Richard Haywood and was not generated by a machine or artificial intelligence. This statement is a legally enforceable assurance of authenticity and can be used to determine the genuine inventor of this work if any doubts arise."

Haywood, one of Britain's best-selling self-published authors, founded the label in an effort to combat what he views as a flood of "AI tat" being sold on Amazon.

At the time, Amazon stated that it was "actively monitoring the rapid evolution of generative AI and the impact it is having on reading, writing, and publishing" .

It implemented a new restriction that limits the number of books that writers can self-publish through Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) to three per day.

KDP allows authors to self-publish their books and sell them on Amazon.

However, Haywood, who has sold over four million books globally, all of which were "written by me and by me only," said the platform is more popular than ever with aspiring novelists hoping to cash in on generative artificial intelligence.

Because of the nature of ChatGPT and many writers' failure to reveal their use of it, it is practically impossible to obtain a complete picture of how many bot-made books are available for purchase.

However, Haywood estimates the figure could be as high as 100,000 worldwide.

He has already put the NO-AI label to each of his novels in The Undead series, and it is available for free download on his website for other authors and publishers to use.

Haywood, a former police officer, is now asking the publishing business to adopt it to create "lawful transparency" in online book sales.

According to him, an official mark of authenticity gives buyers a clear choice between buying AI-generated material and content created by humans.

Without such a stamp, he predicts "an inevitable flood of civil actions" against authors and publishers.

He claims that by omitting to reveal bot-generated content, they are intentionally misleading consumers and may be breaching the law.

The Misrepresentation Act makes it criminal in the United Kingdom to make misleading or fraudulent claims in order to persuade people to buy anything. There is similar legislation in other countries.

He told The European that the legitimate publishing business, including platforms such as Amazon's KDP, is being deliberately targeted by people seeking quick gains through system manipulation.

"The use of AI software simply for mass-producing low-quality material is fast rising, blurring the line between authenticity and artificiality and making it more difficult for consumers to distinguish truth.

"My goal is to achieve lawful transparency by developing a simple, future-proof structure that gives consumers options.

"While AI-generated work is acceptable to some, the NO-AI designation will reassure individuals who prefer great writing written by human authors.

"Without this stamp, it would only be a matter of time until authors and publishers face an unavoidable torrent of legal claims under UK and international contract law.

"There is no question that books made with AI, in part or in whole, must make that fact known legally.

"By concealing it, which the majority of AI authors do, consumers are being tricked or otherwise persuaded into making a purchase under false pretences."

Chat GPT and other AI software can create entire novels from simple requests in minutes.

Other generative technologies let individuals to make covers and artwork with the push of a button and no prior experience.

There are instructions on YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit that show how fast and simple it is to write a book and self-publish it on Amazon the same day.

However, because there is no obligation to acknowledge Chat GPT as the author or co-author of these works, Amazon is currently unable to properly discern what is and is not 'human'.

AI detection software exists, however it is not always accurate.

According to Haywood, who has self-published 40 volumes on Amazon, this might lead to tens of thousands of users unknowingly purchasing bot-created books.

The only way to keep additional people from being misled, he said, is for authors to "protect their own interests" and ensure the validity of their products.

His NO-AI stamp displays four handprints, one for each of the four human personality and behavioral types: dominance, influence, steadiness, and conscientiousness (DISK).

Authors can now download three versions for free and use them in their works.

Haywood has already stamped the current novel in The Undead series with the NO-AI mark, and he plans to do the same for the rest of his novels in coming weeks.

He continued, "The only people who benefit from this money-making scheme are the AI scammers, who have thus far been laughing all the way to the bank."

"This has to change for the sake of the publishing industry and to protect literature itself."
