In accordance with NEP 2020, the Ministry of Education requires a minimum age of six for Class One admissions, promoting developmental readiness and uniformity across the country. Check the details here.

The minimum age for admittance to Class 1 is 6 years, which conforms with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 regulations. This policy emphasises the importance of early childhood care and education, acknowledging that children aged 3-6 years require a different approach than the traditional 10+2 structure, according to information shared by the Ministry of Education (MoE) on its official X (Formerly Twitter).

"The Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, in a letter dated 15.02.2024, with reference to D.O. letter No. 9-2/20- IS-3 dated 31.03.2021, followed by D.O. letter of even number dated 09.02.2023, requested all states/UTs to ensure that the age of admission to Grade 1 is 6+ years from the 2024-25 session onwards," reads the official tweet.

ABOUT CLASS 1 ADMISSION CRITERIA "I would like to invite your kind attention to this Department's D.O. letter No. 9-2/20- IS-3 dated 31.03.2021 followed by D.O. letter of even number dated 09.02.2023 (copies enclosed) wherein all States/UTs were requested to align the age of admission as per the provision contained in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 and ensure admission to Grade-I at the age of 6+ year," the letter reads.

"The session 2024-25 is about to begin, and fresh admissions will take place. As a result, the age for admission to Grade-1 in your state/UT is projected to be 6 or older. I respectfully request that you personally investigate the situation to guarantee compliance and report on the implementation status by February 20, 2024. You may share the notification/instruction passed by you in this regard," it says.

The Ministry of Education's requirement that pupils entering Class 1 be at least 6 years old attempts to guarantee that children are developmentally equipped for the scholastic challenges of primary school.

This mandate fosters equity by allowing all children to mature emotionally, socially, and
cognitively before entering formal schooling.

Furthermore, by sending letters to states and Union Territories (UTs) to enforce this age limit, the MoE has emphasised the significance of consistency and adherence to NEP rules across the country.

This promotes continuity in educational standards and methods, which will assist students as they go through their education.
