On 8 October, the Director-General of UNESCO declared that Morocco’s capital would become the World Book Capital for 2026. UNESCO observed the guidance of the World Book Capital Advisory Committee. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was selected to host the event in 2025. On 23 April 2026, Rabat will kick off a year of celebrations as it hosts the third-largest International book and publishing fair in Africa, coinciding with World Book and Copyright Day.
The Moroccan capital has been granted this honor, making it the 5th African city to receive this recognition, following Alexandra in Egypt, Port Harcourt in Nigeria, Conakry in Guinea, and Accra in Ghana. Upon selection, a city generally plans activities throughout the year to promote books and reading for all age groups. Rabat will also release various industries to promote sustainable economic growth and social benefits by enriching book access and helping the local publishing industry.
The UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization chief Audrey Azoulay highlighted the Rabat book industry's role in creating accessible knowledge. Apart from this, Strasbourg, France, will also be the 2024 World Book Capital.
