Teachers protesting at Jantar Mantar get tenure extension by six months from education ministry

After eight days of protest at Jantar Mantar by over 1500 assistant professors from technical colleges, they have been given an extension of six months by the education ministry. These highly qualified teachers recruited under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) had been given an extension of six months before as well and their tenure was set to be over on March 31. However, no official document had been provided to them despite promises of a further extension of their employment. The teachers were demanding that the central and state governments make good on their promises to retain the well-performing faculties in order to improve the quality of the engineering education systems in the states as documented in the MoU and PIB signed between the central and state governments. The professors have now been granted an extension after the India Today network showed the story of their protest outside the ministry headquarters in Delhi on Tuesday. States will also be asked by the ministry to extend support to these IIT and NIT graduates as teaching members of technical institutions in their states. Source: indiatoday
