The city of Sharjah has acquired exclusive rights for the expansion of Malaysia's BookXcess chain of bookstores into the Middle East and Africa region. This represents a very important step for achieving its ambition of being a major center for books and knowledge across the world. It enhances the status of Sharjah in the global publishing industry.

Memorandum of Understanding Between Sharjah Book Authority and BookXcess

This alliance was made official during the visit of a group of people from Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) headed by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi at the head office of the BookXcess stores in Sunway, Kuala Lumpur. According to the memorandum of understanding, the development, operations, management, and marketing of the BookXcess brand will be under Big Bad Wolf Sharjah, which is a subsidiary of SBA.

Increase in Access to Books

Established with the objective of making books cheap and easily accessible, BookXcess has evolved to be one of the major bookstores in Malaysia. Renowned for its unique store designs, the brand blends books, architecture, and community activities to make traditional bookstores cultural hotspots. It operates throughout Malaysia and Singapore and is also responsible for the Big Bad Wolf Books which holds the record for being the world’s largest traveling book sale.

Through this association, Sharjah aims at introducing the BookXcess concept to other markets.

Boosting Sharjah’s Cultural Vision

Commenting on the alliance, Ahmed Al Ameri said the signing was yet another step in the emirate’s strategic cultural vision. According to him, the partnership is yet another way through which Sharjah has reaffirmed its status as an international hub for books, publishing, and knowledge while also demonstrating the confidence other international publishing firms have in Sharjah.

On his part, Andrew Yap said he was pleased with the alliance and stated that Sharjah’s dedication to books, education, and culture made it the perfect partner for the firm’s expansion. The brand, according to Yap, has the ambition of creating bookstores that are more than retail outlets but cultural centers where people can meet, learn, and embrace reading.

An Added Impetus for the Publishing Scenario in the Region

The collaboration promises to enhance the availability of good books in the Middle East and Africa and offer additional opportunities for publishers, authors, and readers. Through the introduction of the BookXcess concept into the region, Sharjah once again affirms its position as one of the most prominent cities in the world when it comes to literature and publishing.
