This is a result of the increasing attention paid by the corporation to copyright and responsible AI-generated content.

Now the AI will not be able to produce texts similar to a particular author's writing in case the user asks for it directly. On the contrary, ChatGPT tends to refuse the request and suggests that a user should rather talk about other literary features such as tone, genre, pace, etc.

For instance, instead of writing in the "style of" a known author, the chatbot may propose writing a story involving such genres as gothic thriller, exciting thrillers, poetic writing, or philosophy-based writing without plagiarizing a particular literary figure. Thus, the users will be able to experiment with creative writing while not replicating a protected work of literature.

The new rule emerges against the backdrop of ongoing legal challenges against the use of copyrighted materials to train large language models by AI firms. Some authors and publishers claim that the use of generative AI technology may result in writing in a particular style or copying the content of their works.

Though OpenAI has not restricted people from being inspired by literary traditions, there is a clear line that it is making between inspiration and reproduction. People are now allowed to ask for something that is inspired by a certain genre or literary movement or themes or narrative rather than the style of a specific writer.

This revised guardrail is an integral part of OpenAI’s attempt at striking a balance between creativity and copyright in the era of generative AI becoming more popular.
