The Hong Kong government has arrested five suspects during simultaneous raids on two independent bookstores, in the most recent step within the national security structure of the city. The arrests were because of the sale of books that were accused of having “seditious” intention, based on reports by local media and the police.

Two Independent Bookstores Raided

The Have A Nice Stay and Greenfield Book Stores in Mong Kok district, Hong Kong were raided by the police who confiscated several boxes of books. Five people, all aged between 30 to 59, three women and two men, were detained at the scene. The investigation reportedly started when customs officers stopped an overseas consignment of publications that violated the 2024 national security law.

Issues Regarding Freedom to Publish

The raids have sparked fears about the reduction of space for independent booksellers in Hong Kong. Have A Nice Stay was planning to shut down due to its economic woes and lack of clarity about the changing legal landscape concerning books and publications. Human rights organizations have denounced the application of sedition laws because it only further curtails freedom of speech and publishing industry.
