Oxford University Press (OUP) has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Karger Publishers. The transaction is expected to complete in December.
Subject to and following completion, this acquisition will see OUP welcome Karger into its wider organization, bringing together a shared commitment to quality and scholarly integrity and extending the reach and impact of Karger's leading academic and research publishing in medicine and health sciences.
OUP is one of the oldest and largest university press publishers in the world, and a department of the University of Oxford. Its mission is to further the University's objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide. It publishes thousands of trusted research books and journals every year in a wide range of disciplines and formats.
Karger's publishing house is highly respected and features a long history of providing world-class resources for medicine and healthcare professionals. Starting its business in 1890 to link people and science, it presently publishes close to 100 leading journals, and the quality of the publishing program is reflected by 82 of their journals indexed in the Science Citation Index with associated Impact Factor (IF) ranking. Besides this, it publishes an extensive backlist of 9,000 books in medicine and health sciences and a range of innovative educational and outreach products for researchers, healthcare professionals, and industry partners.
Karger Publishers' Chairwoman Gabriella Karger comments, 'We went through an exhaustive process to determine the best partner, and we are convinced that Oxford University Press is the best choice. Karger becomes part of a publishing house that has even a longer history, going back to the 15th century, and reflects our values and dedication to high-quality publishing.' Nigel Portwood, CEO of Oxford University Press, said, 'We are delighted to make this important step toward welcoming Karger colleagues, authors, editors, and its wider community to OUP. Stewarded carefully by the Karger family over many decades, Karger has a long history of providing the highest quality resources for medicine and healthcare professionals. Our shared focus on quality and scholarly integrity offer a strong foundation from which we can continue to serve researchers in medicine and health science far into the future.'
