The Oxford Indie Book Fair welcomed over 1,500 visitors on Sunday at the University of Oxford’s Examination Schools, where attendees met 150 authors and exhibitors showcasing their latest works. Organized by local authors Sylvia Vetta and Ray Foulk, the event featured a vibrant mix of book launches, discussions, and sales, supported by student volunteers from Oxford Brookes University.

Chancellor Paterson Joseph Opens the Fair

Actor and Chancellor Paterson Joseph, known for his role in Peep Show, officially opened the event. Praising the atmosphere, he said, “The care and welcome were beyond my expectations. The energy of the exhibitors and visitors was infectious. Next time, I’ll stay longer and bring a bigger bag for all the books I buy!”

Celebrating Independent Publishing

The fair, which doubled in size this year, benefited from local sponsorship, including significant contributions from the Lucy Group. Organizer Sylvia Vetta highlighted the importance of providing a platform for independent publishers and self-published authors, who often struggle to compete with major publishing houses.

“This fair meets a critical need,” Vetta said. “Smaller publishers like Claret Press tell stories that deserve to be heard but often lack the publicity of the big five.”

Vetta co-hosted a talk titled Telling the Whole Story with Pen Farthing, author of Operation Ark, recounting his experience during the chaotic British evacuation from Afghanistan in 2021.

Key Highlights and Talks

The event featured talks by historian and TV presenter Janina Ramirez, interviewed by James Harrison, and ecologist Hugh Warwick, who discussed environmental themes with Rev. Canon Charlotte Bannister Parker. Renowned illustrator Korky Paul and Dice Comics provided entertainment for young readers, adding a family-friendly element to the fair.

The county library service and the Nasio Trust, an Abingdon-based charity building a community library in western Kenya, also participated, reinforcing the importance of public access to books and knowledge.

Future Events

Michelle Casteletti, representing the Oxford Festival of the Arts, announced the date for the next fair: July 5, 2025, at Magdalen College School in East Oxford.

As the Oxford Indie Book Fair grows, it continues to provide a dynamic space for independent voices in literature to thrive, fostering connections between authors and readers in a historic and inspiring setting.
