Juergen Boos, President and CEO of Frankfurt Book Fair, has announced plans to further broaden the global reach of the fair through a launch of an official book-to-screen network at key international film festivals. The hope is that the initiative will foster and accelerate the process of books being adapted for the screen.
Speaking at an industry panel session at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, Boos referred to the fair's long-standing tradition of supporting the promotion of film adaptations of literature.
"We began with a book-to-screen day in Frankfurt years ago, but one day is no longer sufficient it must be two," Boos said. "We have already taken the concept to the Berlinale and Prague."
He also revealed that negotiations are in progress with Toronto, Busan, and Venice film festivals to create an international network of book-to-screen platforms. "The idea is to provide producers and rights holders with a type of information and connection they require, based on industry standards," said Boos.
He added that there are also ongoing partnerships with the main partners, such as German Films and Gotham Institute New York.
Is the preeminent book market event of the publishing trade, and it has grown to bring books and movies closer together since 2006, hosting the 'Books at Berlinale' pitching event during which 10 agencies and publishers showcase their offerings to about 200 European filmmakers. The fair is also in collaboration with Cannes Market's 'Shoot the Book' and backing Venice's own book-to-film market, celebrating its 10th edition this year.
In 2025, the Frankfurt Book Fair will introduce new 'Book-to-Screen' formats at the Brussels and Thessaloniki book fairs and is taking an active part in this year's Karlovy Vary Film Festival, which continues until July 12.
