Penguin Random House's CEO Hopes AI Can Help Sell more Books: Report | Frontlist

Penguin Random House CEO Nihar Malaviya expressed hope that artificial intelligence would help enhance book publishing, requiring fewer humans to be hired.

According to The New York Times, Penguin Random House CEO Nihar Malaviya expressed hope that artificial intelligence might make it easier to sell more book titles without recruiting more humans in the future.

The study featured a profile of the CEO of Penguin Random House, one of the 'Big Five' worldwide publishing companies that employs thousands of people and dominates the English-language mainstream publishing market.

The article noted that Malaviya was focusing on growth, with the company letting off approximately 60 individuals last year and adopting voluntary buyouts.

Penguin Random House attempted to acquire fellow Big Five publisher Simon & Schuster in 2020, but the acquisition was blocked on antitrust concerns, resulting in the deal being abandoned roughly two years later.

India's publishers are also looking at artificial intelligence to help with book manufacturing. Last year, Harper Collins India CEO Ananth Padmanabhan mentioned that AI narrators might speed up the publishing of translated novels.

While publishers around the world investigate the use of huge language models and the AI tools they enable, some readers are concerned that they will be used to replace creators or automate book acquisitions in an industry already noted for its lack of diversity.
