NMC Initiates Creation of Library on Ancient Indian Medicine | Frontlist

The National Medical Commission (NMC) is in the process of establishing a library dedicated to literature on ancient Indian medicine and surgery. This initiative aims to compile all relevant books and manuscripts, and the NMC is seeking expertise from professionals in the medical field and other disciplines to assist in the identification and collection of these resources.

The decision by the NMC to create this specialized library comes amidst a recent controversy regarding the modification of its logo. The revised logo now features a colored image of Dhanvantari, an avatar of Lord Vishnu and considered the god of Ayurveda in Puranas. Senior officials from the NMC clarified that the Dhanvantari logo, in black and white previously, has been in use for nearly a year. The recent modification involves incorporating a colored photo at the center of the logo to enhance visibility in printouts.

An unnamed official mentioned that similar practices exist globally, citing the example of the World Health Organization (WHO) emblem, which includes the United Nations symbol surmounted by a staff with a coiled snake around it. The NMC's efforts to establish a comprehensive library underscore its commitment to preserving and promoting knowledge about ancient Indian medical practices and surgical techniques.
