The much-anticipated Kochi Literature Festival will kick off on Wednesday at Ernakulathappan Grounds, where the Kochi International Book Festival (KIBF) is currently in full swing.
The event will be inaugurated by Kannada writer Dr H S Siva Prakash, while former KPSC chairman Dr K S Radhakrishnan will be the guest of honour. The keynote lecture will be delivered by Kerala Sahitya Akademi President K Sachidanandan. 'Celebrating Word Power' is the topic for this year.
Over 200 writers and publishers are expected to attend the event.
"We aim to promote emerging writers of different age groups by providing workshops and a platform for book releases," adds KIBF head Advocate M Sasisankar. We anticipate the publication of more than 50 novels."
Agents from various publishing houses are on hand with their own kiosks, giving another layer of glitz to the much-lauded festival. The National Book Trust (NBT) is notable among them. Its course emphasised the value of letter writing as a beautiful and intimate form of communication. "We want children to start writing letters," says Preetika Dubey, an editorial associate at the National Centre for youngsters's Literature of the National Book Trust.
The festival strives to increase young people's access to and exposure to books. "The notion that reading is declining among children is false," says Nimmy Abraham of Manorama Books. This is fairly obvious, according to KIBF president E N Nandakumar. "We expect a total footfall of over one lakh," he said. The book festival concludes on Sunday, December 10th.
