Censorship on the Shakespeare in the State of Florida!!

School districts in Florida must reconsider book selection and teaching approaches due to a new law banning materials with "sexual conduct" as defined by the state.

Media specialists throughout Florida worry that HB 1069 may limit access to books with "sexual conduct" content. This legislation could affect books needed for exams like the College Board's Advanced Placement literature exam and dual-enrollment classes. Some districts have paused their review processes while awaiting the Florida Department of Education's guidance.

The law allows parents to request a special magistrate to review book challenges, which may result in districts removing books to avoid the associated costs. Challenged books containing sexual conduct must be removed within five days until the complaint is resolved. Critics argue this could lead to self-censorship and limit students' access to important literature.

The state's definition of "sexual conduct" has resulted in the banning of books such as Rupi Kaur's "The Sun and All Her Flowers" in Brevard County and limitations on Shakespeare's works in Orange County.

Governor DeSantis dismissed book bans as a "hoax," but critics say bills signed by him target transgender individuals and the LGBTQ+ community. Book restrictions have increased in Florida, driven by the conservative Moms for Liberty group. Superintendent Rocky Hanna halted book checkouts until compliance is ensured.
