Bangor Area Maine Book Fair Returns After a 5-Year-Long Hiatus

A celebration of the literary arts called Maine Book and Authors is returning to Bangor for the first time in five years. More than 20 Maine authors will congregate in Downtown Bangor on Saturday, December 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to greet readers and autograph books.

The event is being planned, by Christopher Packard, a native of Hampden and a science teacher at Bangor High School. Packard is the author of "Mythical Creatures of Maine: Fantastic Beasts from Legend and Folklore" (Down East Books, 2021), which will be available for purchase at the event.

All are invited and can attend the Bangor Area Maine Authors' Book Fair for no cost. Although many tables accept Venmo or Paypal and a few accept credit cards, customers should plan to bring cash. It will take place in the Vestry of the Unitarian Universalist Church at 120 Park Street. The book fair is sponsored by the International Cryptozoology Museum, Briar Patch Books, Charmed in Brewer, and Wicked Brew Cafe. There will be a drawing.

A variety of local best-selling writers with numerous titles will be present at the fair, along with many new authors who will be releasing their first books. There are authors from Maine Authors' Publishing, independently published authors, and traditionally published authors on the list (which is unaffiliated with this event). The authors are Roslyn Reid, Christopher Packard, Bruce Pratt, Robert Spencer, Greg Westrich, Onslow Pennypacker, Ila Yarbrough, Loren Coleman, Robin Clifford Wood, Emma G. Rose, Katie Lattari, Nomar Slevik, Sarah Smiley, Alexandra Hinrichs, Trudy Irene Scee, Constance Ruth Clark, Roxie Zwicker, Douglass Hoover, Dani Bannister, Pam Dixon Oer.

The Field House: A Writer's Life Lost and Found on an Island in Maine by Clifford Wood (Hampden), published by She Writes Press in 2021, won the 2022 Maine Literary Award for Nonfiction as well as the John N. Cole Award for Nonfiction with a Maine Theme.

Pratt (Swanville), an award-winning author, poet, and University of Maine English Lecturer published his first book, "The Serpents of Blissful" (Mountain State Press 2011).

Eight highly regarded Maine and New Hampshire hiking guides, including "Hiking Maine," "Hiking Maine Waterfalls," and "Hiking Maine's Baxter State Park," were written by Westrick (Bangor). He has taught English at Husson University, Eastern Maine Community College, and Kennebec Valley Community College.

Author, documentary filmmaker and podcaster Selvik (Trenton) works independently. His books include "UFOs Over Maine," "Otherworldly Encounters," and "Granite Skies: A Disconcerted Journey Through the Unknown" (all self-published in 2020).

Hoover (Troy) is a skilled blacksmith at Striped Dog Forge who specializes in making knives. He is also an independent self-published author of the critically praised books "The Homestead" (2018) and "The Accursed Huntsman" (2021).

The International Cryptozoology Museum booth will be selling books on cryptozoology, providing exciting news about their relocation to Bangor, and welcoming its founder and director, author Loren Coleman. More than 40 novels have been written by Coleman. The International Cryptozoology Museum in Bangor will profit from every purchase made at the museum table. For the duration of the Book Fair, the library and bookstore of the Bangor Museum will be closed.
