on Feb 17, 2022
Bangladesh’s largest annual book fair kicked off in its capital Dhaka on 15th Februray. The book fair had a theme “We want a Covid free Bangladesh”. The event gathered a large number of attendees to celebrate the event for literature. A total number of 800 stalls were set up and about 500 organizations participated in the fair, Jalal Ahmed, member of the fair management committee and Director of Bangla Academy, told journalists earlier.
The Book Fair is held in compliance with COVID-19 health guidelines as attendees are not allowed to visit the fair without wearing a face mask and sanitizing hands. The Book Fair was originally supposed to commence from the first week of February, however, it was postponed due to the pandemic and rising of cases.
Calls for extending the duration of the fair have grown as publishers are worried they might face losses if the month-long fair is reduced to 14 days. “As this time we’ve started the fair belatedly, February 15, I think we can continue it for a month,” Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said when virtually inaugurated the event.
