Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the father of Bangladesh, received a "Special Literary Prize" from the Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature (FOSWAL) on 25th March for his trilogy The Unfinished Memoirs, The Prison Diaries, and New China 1952.
While presenting the prize, a citation read, "Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature is honored to offer SAARC Literary Award- 2023 to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for remarkable literary brilliance for his trilogy."
The prize was solemnly presented to the visiting Bangladeshi authors and scholars Ramendu Majumder and Mofidul Haque at the festival by eminent Punjabi novelist and FOSWAL Founding President Ajeet Cour.
Since 2001, the Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature (FOSWAL) has given out the SAARC Literary Prize each year.
Yet, the citation stated, "Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, known as "Bangabandhu" to his people and the creator of Independent Bangladesh, is a legendary figure in the global struggle for national liberation of oppressed people. He was ruthlessly assassinated by the forces of evil, much like Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, but nothing on earth can take his name out of history."
It continued, "When his long-lost jail journal and notebook came to light and later released, a new dimension of his life opened up."
The trilogy "has immense significance as a political text and a personal tribute written with love and compassion by a man who changed the course of history and led his people to freedom," according to the citation.
The Foundation of SAARC Writers and Literature stated that it was an excellent opportunity to recognize Sheikh Mujibur Rahman for his trilogy's exceptional literary accomplishments.
