The Author Boom Amid Declining Readership: A Modern Paradox
The author boom thrives despite declining readership. Explore the paradox, shifting publishing trends, and how books are evolving in the attention economy.on Mar 31, 2025

In Bookstrapping for this week, Reeta Ramamurthy Gupta points out that though the ease of publishing has created a proliferation of books, the attention economy is still highly competitive.
The interesting paradox of the author boom during declining readership begs some very pointed questions. Although the publishing process has been simplified, making it easier for more books to come out, the attention economy is still very competitive. Battling against many digital distractions, the old habit of reading is being redefined. In the past decade or so, the definition of what constitutes an 'author' itself is changing shape. Surprisingly enough, perhaps this is better news for readers.
Here are our five Bookstrapping takeaways -
1. Publishing ease and flipping publisher roles are here to stay. Self-publishing platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing, Smashwords, and IngramSpark have leveled the playing field. The gatekeeper role of the publisher has flipped to new publishers as enablers, empowering the masses to put their stories out there.
Anybody with a manuscript and a computer connection can be a published author. The desire to tell tales, disseminate learning, and leave a lasting legacy is still a compelling motivator. Qualitative touches continue to be a potent but subjective tea-time discussion. BUT each author who insists on being read broadens the discussion about books.
2. Books are not necessarily a business in themselves, but a means to a business. Most books are authored with a perspective of developing personal brands and channels to business; these too, are promoted extensively in non-traditional forms. Some books are on organizations desiring to write their histories for posterity. The worth of these books - to the stakeholders - lies above the MRP of the book. These books become corporate giveaways and training aids.
3. For many, writing a book is a personal accomplishment, regardless of commercial success. Self-publishing also provides an opportunity for self-indulgence, like getting your own portrait painted. However, there's more to this trend; as more and more niche audiences thrive online, creating dedicated communities around specific genres and topics, the era of the million-copy bestseller has made room for the small, quaint book that touches your heart. Friends and relatives, who would have otherwise never have read a book, become book readers.
4. Unlike the group of authors who are current bestsellers and international brands, there have been a few regional success stories. Online promotional tools, like social media, email marketing, and online advertising, have given authors a direct means of connecting with the target audience. Groups where books are promoted in an atmosphere that has an extra incentive, turn into strong promoters.
5. Readers are book hopping as well. The development of audiobooks and e-books have presented other forms of consumption, answering changing reader desires. Individuals are listening to books and toggling between titles on Kindle; diving into certain chapters and out of them - not reading a book from cover to cover.
And how does one then come to an agreement over a serious writer and a worthwhile book? Some trends are seen; English-language books, especially from the UK and US, have immense worldwide popularity and are extensively exported. There is also a gender-balanced mix of writers; with the only exception being in genres, such as romance and young adult fiction, which have a disproportionately high percentage of female writers.
Foreign language books, especially those from culturally diverse areas such as Latin America and Europe, are picking up pace now through translation and greater international visibility. Each writer is helping to create a culture of reading, even if it is to sell their own book.
Let the revolution win! And let us let democracy mold this new world. It is infinitely superior to a bookless world!
