Duangporn Sutthisomboon, vice president of the Publishers and Booksellers Association of Thailand (PUBAT), stated that the 22nd Bangkok International Book Fair and the 52nd Thailand Book Fair are taking place concurrently at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre till April 8. The fairs opened on Thursday.
Eleven publishers from Britain, Taiwan, Japan, China, and Ukraine have set up 18 booths at the event. When asked what drew them to Thailand, many of the publishers stated that they believe Thai readers prefer physical books over e-books.
According to Duangporn, many Thai parents enjoy shopping for English-language books for their children because the prices are significantly lower.
Meanwhile, Thais paid close attention to a Taiwanese publisher's exhibit, which sold children's books in both Thai and Mandarin. These bilingual novels were also illustrated by Thai cartoonists.
According to the publisher, the Taiwanese government supported the printing of these dual-language books to foster cultural interchange between the two countries.
Books produced in Chinese, particularly boy-love stories translated from Thai, were also appealing, according to Duangporn.
Meanwhile, a British publisher stated that he intends to attend next year's event as well because the response in Thailand has been very positive. He also said that he will attend the Bangkok Rights Fair next year to discuss publication rights with Thai publishers.
