Frontlist | Aligarh Muslim University: FDP On Waste Management Concludes

Resource persons provided in-depth knowledge and useful insights into the technological advancements for processing, treatment and disposal of solid waste, a major challenge in places with high population density and how to move from reliance on waste dumps that offer no environmental protection, to waste management systems that retain useful resources within the economy. The deliberations were made in the week-long, Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on ‘Waste Management: Challenges and Opportunities’ organised by the Department of Civil Engineering, Z H College of Engineering and Technology (ZADC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) which concluded with a valedictory function. Speaking on future scope of waste management, Prof Sirajuddin Ahmad (Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi) gave an overview of a wide range of waste management strategies based on current technologies, strategic innovations, and monitoring tools. He also discussed feasible approaches for sustainable recycling and utilization of solid wastes. Dr R K Bansal (Director General, Recycling and Environment Industry Association India) deliberated the need for appropriate technologies and compliance regulatory framework to make recycling economically attractive. Prof Abdul Baqi (Chairman, Department of Civil Engineering) stressed the importance of organising FDPs to enhance technical skills on waste management and optimization techniques and to provide the faculty members with a platform to understand and plan effective strategies. Programme coordinators, Prof Sohail Ayub and M Salim Mahtab said that more programmes on the need of sustainable environmental development are scheduled to take place. The valedictory function also had a special session on the importance of Yoga and meditation by Chandrakand S Deoda. Prof I H Farooqi (Convener) extended the vote of thanks. Organised under the aegis of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) Training And Learning (ATAL) Academy, the week-long FDP featured lectures by resource persons from the IIT Roorkee, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Jamia Millia Islamia, The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), New Delhi and AMU.
