University students inform Akal Takht Jathedar of the situation in a letter.
Students from Punjabi University have written to Akal Takht Jathedar about the alleged damage to Sikh literature and scriptures kept at the Dr. Ganda Singh library that sparked a protest on campus yesterday. A committee to investigate the alleged incident has been formed by the university in the interim.
A rare collection of books, literature, and religious texts related to the Sikh religion, according to students with the Secular Youth Federation of India (SYFY), were allegedly damaged and disrespected on campus. They claimed to have started a demonstration against the issue on Monday outside the Vice-office Chancellor's and to have since written the Jathedar, Akal Takht.
According to Yadvinder Singh Yadu of the SYFI, "After the university formed a committee in the name of stock verification, the literature kept at Dr. Ganda Singh Punjabi reference library on the campus was disrespected and thrown on the ground. These were photographed, and the images were posted on a social networking site to offend Sikhs' religious feelings.
In response, the university stated, "A committee has been formed to investigate the entire matter of alleged disrespect to religious books. A report will be submitted for the same.
Members of the committee include Malkinder Kaur from the Department of Religious Studies as well as senior professors and specialists in Sikh studies. According to sources, the inventory was done a long time after the photos were posted on Facebook.
