With schools already devising programs to promote reading habits among students, now more than 100 students and teachers (both Government and private schools), who have written more than 105 books, are going to register with IWR (International World Records) Book of Records in May.
The group, termed as 'creative writers', comprises students and teachers from all over Tamil Nadu belonging to government and private schools. And, over 100 students and teachers will be awarded 'Creative Author's Award' and get registered with IWR Book of Records.
The group comprising 41 students and 59 teachers will be releasing books, written by every individual on May 24. The project began on a small scale during the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020 and is ongoing till date, with additional students and teachers set to join with the encouragement of the school education department, state members.
D Brinda, the founder of the collective, who works as an English teacher at a government high school at Melpattakkam in Cuddalore district, explained to DT Next, "The group of creative writers was initiated in 2020 to motivate students to read and write rather than getting deviated to social media. We provide a topic daily and get members to write. After that, a critique is provided on the written piece. Also, there is a mentor group for children so that editorial work is done on student's work and poem, before publishing it to others."
One such book containing a series of poems has been authored by students, and the work was done within 60 days. "We also hold open mic sessions monthly, where all members have the chance to share their stories and recite poems. Also, the collective brings out a bi-monthly e-magazine," she further stated.
Since 2020 to date, the collective has published over 500 books, both poems and prose. It currently has over 400 active members, which started with 20 members in a WhatsApp group. "This project has enhanced the creative writing and general knowledge and expertise of every student and instructor. Having approximately 100 writers publishing 105 books on one day is an accomplishment alone. This also inspires members to focus on developing their writing and reading skills," said Brinda.
